Welcome Back Lobos

ALPINE - As another fall semester begins, Sul Ross President Carlos Hernandez expressed his excitement and plans for the new year.

Hernandez said Sul Ross enrollment has grown thanks to intentional efforts from admissions, strengthened partnerships, and recruitment in the Big Bend region.

The increase in admissions can also be attributed to SRSU’s dual credit program, which allows high school students to seamlessly transfer to four-year universities. Students in fields such as nursing and education will be able to graduate in about two years, following their high school graduation.

Sul Ross still faces challenges with retention. To address this, the university has created the Lobos LEAD, which provides new students with advising, mentorship, and expands academic support services. “We are also reviewing financial aid and scholarship programs to make sure cost is not a barrier,” he said.

Students may notice an increase in remote course offerings. According to the president, this isn’t due to faculty shortages, but rather a reflection of flexibility and growth. In fact, SRSU has welcomed 30 new faculty members just this semester. “Residential undergraduate programs in Alpine will continue to be face-to-face intensive, ensuring that our students are engaged with faculty.”

The university is also ensuring that students' counseling and tutoring needs are met with support services, available both in person and online through partnerships such as TimelyCare, an online platform that provides students with 24/7 access to medical and mental health services. Looking forward, Dr. Hernandez' top priorities include strengthening student success, building sustainable enrollment, and continuing to invest in the university. Above all, the president’s message to students is one of belonging and encouragement:

“You belong here, and you have a team of people who want to see you succeed,” he told the Skyline. "Take advantage of every opportunity and don’t be afraid to ask for help when you need it. To faculty and staff, I want to say thank you. Your commitment is what makes Sul Ross special. Together, we can make this an incredible year.”
