ALPINE — As October draws to a close, so does Domestic Violence Awareness Month, but for survivors across the Big Bend region, the challenges of domestic violence don't disappear when the calendar turns to November.

While October brings increased attention to domestic violence through awareness campaigns and community outreach, organizations like the Family Crisis Center of the Big Bend provide support to survivors year-round.

"Domestic violence awareness shouldn't be seasonal, because support for survivors shouldn't be either," said Denise Olazaba, community educator and client advocate at the Family Crisis Center.

For survivors in rural West Texas, seeking help can present additional challenges. The center serves Brewster, Jeff Davis, Pecos, Presidio and Terrell counties, where geographic isolation, limited transportation, financial barriers, and a lack of nearby housing options can make accessing assistance difficult.

"In a rural community like ours, one of the biggest challenges is access," Olazaba said.

Olazaba emphasized that domestic violence extends beyond physical abuse and can include emotional manipulation, intimidation, isolation, and financial control. She also cautioned against judging survivors who remain in abusive relationships, noting that leaving is not always simple or safe.

The center provides free, confidential services to help survivors understand their options and access support without pressure to make decisions before they are ready.

Community members can help year-round by volunteering, donating, supporting prevention education and creating an environment where survivors feel comfortable seeking help.

"You may not always see the impact of your support, but a conversation, a donation, a connection to resources, or simply believing someone can make a real difference in their life," Olazaba said.
