Sul Ross Takes First and Second Place Awards at TIPA Conference
By Eliya Alvidrez, Skyline Editor
ALPINE - Throughout April 10-12, The Sul Ross Skyline made a powerful impact at the 2025 Texas Intercollegiate Press Association Convention, held in San Marcos, TX. The Skyline brought home 1 first place and 3 second place awards in various categories, showcasing the organization's determination and talent.
TIPA is the oldest state collegiate press association in the country. It features contests, scholarships, and workshops for university’s student publication organizations. Skyline Advisor, Sid Balman Jr., and I went as representatives of the Skyline. Balman led a panel discussion about Press Freedom, along with myself and 2 colleagues from Baylor University, where we received positive feedback afterwards.
It was the first time I had ever participated in something like TIPA. I was determined to take as much as I could from this conference, knowing that this is where I want my career path to lead me, and it was nothing less than spectacular. Receiving commendation and compliments after speaking on the panel left me with an amazing feeling.
“We are punching above our weight for the fourth year in a row,” said Balman, referring to awards in previous years.
The success at the convention marks a significant moment for the program, paving the way for even bigger accomplishments in the future.
