ALPINE – Enrollment at the Sul Ross State University Alpine campus has gone up by 102 students since the Fall 2022 semester, the first time in eight years that it has increased, SRSU Provost Bernie Cantens said.

“In addition to the increase in Alpine enrollment, we have also seen increases in students in residential living,” Cantens said. “Our residential living is at capacity for the first time in many years.”

SRSU’s faculty and degree offerings have also grown. Eight new faculty members were hired for the Alpine campus this Fall, and SRSU plans to hire eight more new faculty members for the Eagle Pass campus next Fall. New program offerings include the MA in Forensic Science, the MS in Educational Instructional Technology, the MA in Anthropology and a graduate certificate in Border Security and Management.

“We have created a new School of Health Sciences, which includes our Nursing Department, Kinesiology Department, and a new Health Science Department. We are currently searching for a new assistant dean for the School of Health Sciences,” Cantens said.

Cantens spoke highly of other improvements being made at Sul Ross and says that these new offerings will likely increase enrollment.

Although overall enrollment has increased, the number of incoming freshmen has slightly decreased from last year. There were 250 first-year students at the New Student Convocation during the Fall 2022 semester, which was the largest freshman class that Sul Ross had seen in three years. This year’s freshmen class consists of 231 students.
