ALPINE – Sul Ross State University hosted their 3rd Annual Scholarship Rodeo on Saturday, February 21st. This event highlights the talent of any high school juniors and seniors, as well as junior college transfer students, that are interested in attending the university.

The winner of each event receives a $500 rodeo scholarship to Sul Ross, should they choose to attend. Just over thirty contestants performed at this rodeo, and eight scholarships were awarded.

The opportunity for young rodeo athletes to compete at a college arena, as well as meet a college rodeo team, and win a scholarship in the true competitive nature of rodeo, is what this sport is all about.

“If one third of these recruits come to Sul Ross, I believe we will win a national championship in the next four years.” Head rodeo coach CJ Aragon said.

The scholarship rodeo runs like a normal performance, but with free admission to the public. Alpine residents came to watch and show their support for these recruits, and their love for college rodeo. This event gave the community a chance to see what the future of the Sul Ross Rodeo team may look like and gave the recruits the opportunity to know the community of Alpine.

Most of the recruits went on campus tours and had the opportunity to practice with the current rodeo team, head coach CJ Aragon, and assistant coach Timmi Hutchings.

College sophomore transfer student, Clancey Newman, who competed at the scholarship rodeo in the saddle bronc riding, said, “I think CJ is giving everybody a great opportunity to compete for a scholarship. Instead of just picking them, he’s giving everybody a chance to win.”

"When a person is touring a college, I bet you would feel out of place and nervous, but here it was different. “I felt like I was already a part of the team, and everyone there was involved and welcoming.” that the Sul Ross Rodeo Team created.
