GeoFest Surpasses Expectations

ALPINE - The sun has set on the first-ever GeoFest, and the results are better than they could have ever expected. The Geology department’s goal of $20,000 was surpassed, with nearly $3,000 from the 150 attendees and over $30,000 from sponsorships, including SM Energy.

The event, held this past March, was created to counteract the federal grant funding cuts that threatened to cancel the students' capstone field camp during the summer. Field camp is a graduation requirement, and many students were relying on GeoFest to meet their financial needs.

Not only does this ensure that the $2,000 fee is covered for all nine students, but it also keeps them stress-free as they will not be forced to work part-time jobs that delay their careers.

All hands were on deck to make GeoFest a success, with students and faculty working from 8 a.m. to 9 p.m., and countless hours beforehand to prepare. Food vendors were especially popular, selling out by 2 p.m., which Dr. Thomas Shiller hopes will draw more attention and encourage other businesses to get involved.

Live music drew in a diverse crowd of students, locals, and tourists. Presentations were also held at GeoFest, providing more information on interesting geological subjects. While the presentations hit a bump because the projector didn't work in sunlight, plans to host them in the Lodge next year are underway.

As this is the first GeoFest, there are bound to be some errors that will only improve in the years to come. Overall, the first official GeoFest was a success and offered hope to many more students who plan to attend Sul Ross for the geology program.

Rather than relying on federal funding, these partnerships are more sustainable in the present and future. Dr. Shiller said, “Building relationships with local donors provides a permanent 'safety net' for our future students.”
